is a writer and brand consultant, mostly in the fashion and lifestyle spaces. She's originally from Oakland, CA but now lives in Brooklyn (she hit her 10-year official New Yorker anniversary last year). Her work has been featured in publications like The Cut, Elle, Vogue, and the Wall Street Journal, and last year she launched , a newsletter that explores our individual tastes, and how they're shaped by identity and culture.something you read/saw recently you enjoyed: I'm currently reading North Words by Daniel Mason and pleasantly surprised by how much I'm enjoying the weirdness of it — mishmashing timelines, characters, and writing styles.
last thing you bought irl: The last thing on my credit card statement is probably a loaf of bread and a coffee from Otway bakery in Clinton Hill. Their bread is the best! More of a fun purchase — I recently spent two weeks in Japan and bought a bright green, sheer Auralee sweater that I'm now obsessed with. It's the ideal weight for the current early fall weather.
life hack: hmm I'm trying to think of something that doesn't come off as trite or unhelpful - yes we could all drink more water and get outdoors more. I guess my life hack is a little specific as someone who doesn't have a dishwasher and also despises doing dishes. If this applies to you welcome, if not, I'm sorry it's not the most general advice. The more I let dishes pile up, the more annoyed I get when I have to tackle the pile, so any time I'm in the kitchen, I'll assign myself one minute to just bang out a few dishes. Often, I end up doing them all, but even if I only get to one or two in that minute, it really helps cut down my dread at the end of the night. Voila!
you couldn’t have your career without: curiosity. I'm always finding story ideas in the weirdest and most random of places. Once something starts to worm its way into your mind, it's a sign that it might be something worth writing about, no matter how big or small. For Elle, I recently covered the rise of ultra-specific wedding dress codes and the fact that many invites now come with a dress code moodboard. It was a story born of my own confusion over why every wedding I attended suddenly had a visual guide for what to wear.
advice for someone who wants to be where you are/do what you do: My career advice (something I continue to take to heart too) is to be bold. In freelancing, I spent a lot of time nervous to reach out to a person or publication I didn't feel qualified to work for, I spent a lot of time not wanting to bother someone or not wanting to take up too much space. You can be respectful while also pushing yourself out of your comfort zone and reaching for exciting things. It's a tough industry with a lot of rejection and moving goalposts and I don't think growing a thick skin is something everyone can easily do, I know I still don't have one after all these years. Still, I think growth comes in being bold and knowing failures come with that, but also some of the biggest and most rewarding successes.
three brands/pubs/people to follow:
I love old homes, so I follow a lot of fixer upper Instagrams like saving old houses, I'm always saving images of old details I love, and I like daydreaming about fixing up a place of my own one day.
My friend Monica Mendal is a travel writer and is always going places that look like something out of a dream, so I love following her for inspo.
On days when I'm feeling a little down, I'll spend 10 minutes watching baby elephants and rhinos at Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and it lifts my spirits. Highly recommend.
