state of the saloon
we had our first event thursday (thank you to
for sharing her space!!) which was a resounding success! with over 90 attendees and somehow still so much wine left. am truly floored by the way this project took off, & mesmerized by people’s enthusiasm for building a more cross-collaborative & generous network in New York and beyond. it’s been so gratifying to see the way this community has evolved in just three months—into jobs, events, friendships, writing groups, book clubs—all endeavors toward the meaning and closeness that can be so hard to find, at any age, in any city, but at least for myself, most certainly here.my intention for saloon was to create a space where people could feel empowered and enabled in their ambition and interests, and less hopeless about the elite culture of our existing networks, which exclude valuable minds and talent because of how they’re innately designed. people’s curiosity and generosity led us to a really incredible place on thursday and I couldn’t believe I was standing in a room of so many brilliant, brave, and open people.
i am very very lucky, and very very grateful. ty for being there. more to come <3

member spotlight: rachel schwartzmann
is the author of Slowing (9/17/2024, Chronicle Books) and the writer/host of Slow Stories—a multimedia project that explores living, working, and creating more intentionally. She also writes about books, creativity, design, and fashion, and her essays and interviews have appeared in BOMB Magazine, Coveteur, Literary Hub, TOAST Magazine, and elsewhere. Rachel has been featured in esteemed outlets, including ELLE, VOGUE, Condé Nast Traveler, and The Creative Independent. You can follow her on Instagram @rachelschwartzmann to see what she’s reading, writing, wearing, and sharing.something you read/saw recently you enjoyed: I really enjoyed Honey by Isabel Banta, and the latest episode of the My Brilliant Friend adaptation was incredible (as usual).
last thing you bought irl: A sourdough croissant from Winner.
life hack: Pay attention to the details. For example, I believe in the power of daily walks: studying the light in the trees, letting yourself be moved by laughter from passersby. Tangible, ordinary delights never fail to inspire—if you take the time to notice them.
if you had one, what felt like your "big break": Meeting and working with the Tumblr team at age eighteen definitely helped jumpstart my creative career. Then, more recently, working with my incredible agent and editor to bring my first book into the world. :)
advice for someone who wants to be where you are/do what you do: Be open to evolution, follow your curiosities (even if they lead you down an unexpected path), accept that honing your craft may take time, and nurture your relationships/community.
upcoming dinner reservation: Provini on 8th Avenue in Park Slope.
three brands/pubs/people to follow:
Girls on the Page—both on Instagram and Substack—is an incredible resource celebrating women in literature. (Emma, the force behind it, is also an incredible writer herself.)
The Creative Independent is a wonderful addition to any creative person's toolkit.
My friend Ella Frances Sanders (who was a guest on the Slow Stories podcast) is an incredible artist and writer. She brings her talents and rich noticing to The Sometimes Newsletter.
