state of the saloon

okay we took a brief holiday break (I whined about it here if you happen to be so interested) but are BACK on this most monumentous day of the year—the very last. over on our end, we’re working on ramping up partnerships, lining up member spotlights, and building out our community with more valuable contacts to keep things fun and flirty in the group chat. in the new year, we hope to move off Substack to our own website, stop using my personal email as our email, ramp up our events, and create a third membership tier that further curates your saloon experience. one step at time, yk.

plus, we are gearing up for another event (date TBD but keep your ears perked for January)!

lastly, we are very excited to welcome the founder of Philo Studio, Erica Bonelli, Francesca Hadland, a copywriter at Pink Squid in London, Isabelle Conner at SkinFix, and the Deputy Managing Editor at Hey Alma, Vanessa Friedman.

remember: we are always taking nominations! and you can join our community + the discord with a paid membership at any time by emailing juliafharrison@gmail.com.

this week, our members are seeking:

  • contacts at Ace Hotel/Atelier Ace, MadFeed, Book of the Month

  • an art studio to rent

  • sewing classes in NYC

  • an interior designer (who does consultations!)

if that’s you, join our paid tier and get connected!

saloon bulletin:

  • Suze just wrapped up a big branding and web project for sewing pattern designer Syd Graham—it's a great example of her work and talent. Suze is just one of many talented creators in saloon, and one more reason to join and connect with her and people like her!

  • Stuart Pennebaker's upcoming novel Ghost Fish was written about in People. Read about the book and get excited for its release in Summer 2025!

member spotlight: henry fisher

Henry F. is an artist and buyer from Houston, Texas, and has been in New York since 2020. For the past two years, he’s been focused on making Hank’s Americana, a zine focused on American style and capturing everyday people who have unique points of view on getting dressed. During the day, Hank buys womenswear at RRL for Ralph Lauren’s direct to consumer channels. Volume 5 of Hank’s Americana coming late January!

something you watched recently and enjoyed: Conclave. This film, both visually and conceptually, was an interesting and beautiful look at how humans struggle and attempt to change for the better.

last thing you bought irl: Cup of coffee or a six pack, but product wise it’s a navy blue dress shirt for the zine. Stay tuned!

life hack: Sleep with the window cracked open in the winter. Fresh air never hurt nobody, and we could all probably use some more.

if you had one, what felt like your “big break”: Deciding to make something for myself by following my instincts. I believe success is a byproduct of being creative, but time will tell if that hunch is correct.

advice for someone who wants to be where you are/do what you do: If you have an idea, try to make it. It can be bad. Sometimes getting the idea out is more important than executing it well, since it makes room for something else to happen in your brain.

upcoming dinner reservation: Christmas Eve with the family at Pappasitos in Houston…for the 23rd year in a row.

3 brands/pubs/people to follow:

L’Etiquette Magazine, men’s and women’s

Big Rock Candy Mountaineering for awesome vintage inspired down jackets

@alexisclaustre - fantastic fashion inspiration from Paris for the boys and girls
