state of the saloon

i’ll begin by saying we are sending love (and money!) to California, and have been thinking of our members, but also all those affected by the fires this past week.

Rachel Davies (they/them)
has put together this really thoughtful list of GoFundMe’s to donate to. if you have places to add, I’ll be happy to add those to this newsletter moving forward, so we can use this as a reference.

Personal Space
Where to donate to people who've lost their homes in the LA fires
IF YOU HAVE GOFUNDME LINKS TO SUBMIT, PLEASE SEND THEM VIA THIS GOOGLE FORM. I AM FIELDING MANY DMS WHICH ARE IMPOSSIBLE TO KEEP UP WITH ALONE. THE GOOGLE FORM HELPS TO KEEP EVERYTHING IN ONE SHAREABLE PLACE NOW THAT I HAVE VOLUNTEERS HELPING KEEP THIS UP TO DATE…

Cat’s Substack
Neighbors in Need
I will not go into the emotional part of the devastation that’s decimated my city just yet. I am lucky enough to have a standing home so let’s help our neighbors. If you have the means, please considering helping our community rebuild. This might just be a list of names to you, but these are our neighbors who lost everything. Send any links of your love…

the delay in sending this saloon out has only been half-intentional, as we’re going to switch to a bi-monthly model instead of a weekly, which means we’ll be getting slightly more specific with our opps to highlight those which might be most applicable to our members.

we are welcoming lots of new members: Halie Bonfiglio from Caraway Home, Rose Harris, events associate at The Brand Guild, Anais Cooper Hackman, programming and partnerships Director at Ray, Madison Kennedy, who works in culinary and event production, Anne Kirk, a senior designer and art director at ReBag, Lily Smith at JLS, Patrick William Jordan at Buzzfeed, visual & motion designer Nina Bishop (also owner of Shop Reverie!), and brand strategist Laurel Pilson. pHEW! keep the nominations coming, i live and breathe nominations!!!

this week, our members are seeking:

  • connections at MadFeed and Drippy Pots

  • beekeeper connections in NYC area

  • anyone involved in or know of exciting web design, UI/UM communities, newsletters, etc.

  • tips or insight on building out a dynamic digital portfolio for PR/communications/brand work

if that’s you, join our paid tier and get connected!

saloon bulletin:

  • saloon members Tys Sweeney and Alexandra Clear connected to collaborate on Now Frolic, go read Alexandra’s piece about how she rang in the new year…

  • Laid Off Pen Pals is coming back, join the waitlist to connect with some really great people and prompt conversations

  • Ryan McMahon has just published the first newsletter of their new Substack, What I Need, Wrote & Ate.

  • Sarah Wood Gonzalez’s article “Don’t Call It a Gym. It’s a Sporting Club” was published in NYT!

  • Katie Stone of

    Plant Based
appeared in NY Mag for kicking her lip balm addiction

remember: we are always taking nominations! and you can join our community + the discord with a paid membership (pending a brief review!) at any time by emailing juliafharrison@gmail.com.
