member spotlight: kayla roolaart
is a Brooklyn-based creative and merchant with a passion for food, design, and the art of gathering. She’s built a career curating best-in-class homeware, developing compelling brand collaborations, and launching thoughtfully designed products; previously at Food52 and Dansk. After a career break spent traveling and working on creative projects, she’s open to new opportunities in e-commerce, merchandising, brand strategy, marketing, content, and food/events. Most recently, she launched No Crumbs, a playful exploration of color, food, and style on Substack.something you watched recently and enjoyed: I really enjoyed I’m Laughing Because I’m Crying by Youngmi Mayer (I audiobooked it—hearing authors narrate their own stories is such a treat). It checked all my boxes: WOC author, identity politics, funny/sad, and a dash of NYC (food scene) lore.
last thing you bought irl: stationary from Muji.
life hack: “Just make it exist first. You can make it good after.” I’ve seen this quote floating around, and as someone who’s let perfectionism hold me back, I’ve learned that the sooner you start, the sooner you’ll get where you want to be and experience the necessary growth along the way. Also, peel ginger with a spoon.
if you had one, what felt like your “big break”: Pouring my creative energy into No Crumbs and seeing my series “Color Combinations I Love, Food Pairing I’d Hate” take off has been incredible. Landing my dream job out of college was also a big win, but this feels even bigger.
advice for someone who wants to be where you are/do what you do: honestly, the past few years feel like a blur, but right now I’m focused on intentionally building my career path, aligning with brands I resonate with, and diving into projects that excite me. what’s been most instrumental is knowing when to push your vision and trust your point of view, all while staying connected to your audience/customer.
upcoming dinner reservation: Cafe Fiorello in the UWS for a post-ballet bite, but mostly for their martinis and old New York vibes
