dispatch from
:i’ve asked the founders of
(pete & serena) to do a little write-up of A Weekend In The Life because i’m obsessed with their project, which is more or less to unveil the exclusivity of night life, because everyone needs to dance. there’s no more honorable mission, imho. weekend dispatch below:Thursday, 7PM, Williamsburg
“Are you guys ready for some trivia?!” echoes flatly across the sparsely populated bar. A smattering of claps, one cheer. I turn to Ellie, both of our faces scrunch in confusion.
Ellie: “No fucking way dude.”
Me: “Literally of course.”
Me: [sheepishly, to the bartender] “Hey so, uh, we were told to start playing at 7...”
Bartender: [wide eyed, empathetic] “No fucking way dude.”
Andrés arrives, no he didn’t know, yes, classic right? A walk, a cigarette and 7 turned quickly to 9. We’re back the bar.
It’s our second **Off Leash**, the dance-party love-child of Andrés, Ellie and myself. This time we’re at the Woods.
It’s Thursday: famously the day right after the Woods makes all their money on Misster, a well-known and well-attended queer party.
The DJ booth, more akin to a small plastic penalty box, barely fits the three of us. I start us off at, dare I say, a demure 110 bpm. We do our rounds for the first hour: half-hosting, half-spinning mellowed out disco & soul.
Friends and strangers nod, some dance. The rooms fills briefly, then ebbs back out. Ellie departs, the bartender keeps us around until 2.
The air is still warm from the day as we exit. We wrestle two Citi bikes out of their enclosures and find our way homeward.
Friday, 8PM, Clinton Hill
I rattle out two baby aspirin and shuffle back to my laptop. Last night’s arithmetic: 1 cocktail, 5 cigarettes and 5 hours of sleep. Not adding up.
I consider a trip to Mansions, I consider listening to the hotline. I smoke what’s left of our nice weed from Maine & fall into a Discogs rabbit hole. I nod off before midnight.
Saturday, 1:30PM, Williamsburg
“I’ll be there before you can say huckleberry pie” reads my phone, barely legible against the noontime sun.
“bro I’ve already made a huckleberry pie” I reply.
Gab shows up eventually, energetically. We link up with her visiting friends. Oxford, the Hague, Joseph, Dan, another; sorry but I will probably forget all of that. It’s my Nth time hauling sound and DJ equipment up the bridge. With enough hands, the setup is smooth. Finally, no hiccups.
Except for the generator, which appears to be wheezing. The power cuts out and sound dies. Once, twice.
Me: “I don’t think today’s our day”
Gab: [grinning] “What about that?”
She’s pointing at an industrial sized generator locked away inside a 10 foot fence. Before I can reply, she’s inside the fence, gleefully pulling at the throttle. It starts immediately.
“No fucking way dude.”
It’s nearly triple the size of my now defunct 2500W unit. I trawl through last night’s discoveries. Max In The World, Skeet (thanks Amelia), new SPF 50. The crowd thickens and I quickly forget our generator troubles. I bounce and bob happily between 120-135 bpm.
The UK boys take over, the bridge fills with wobbly bass and grime. The sun lowers, the crowd thins. Trash is packed, extension cords wrapped and we’re back in Williamsburg facing a row of glistening Miller High Life’s (High Lives?). A quick de-brief, a few bar-sized friendships and I’m back to Friday: on the couch, A/C unit puttering against my neck.
