about the partner: superior merchandise co.
Superior Merchandise Co. began life in 2015 as a combination design shop/cafe/community space in Troy, NY, and now consists of a trio of friendly brands. Curated retail shop SM CO sells fun + functional items from small makers via its online storefront and its tiny “Superette” corner store. Touchy Coffee connects coffee drinkers with small farmers doing amazing things with micro-lot coffees, bringing specialty coffee to our community in an exciting and approachable way. Finally, soon-to-launch There There Foods will serve up fresh CPG takes on the comforting classics in every pantry—our cafe menu cult-favorite oatmeal flavors will start hitting shelves this fall.
saloon members receive 15% off purchases with code SALOON15 at both superiormerchandise.co and touchycoffee.com!
Superior Merchandise Co. is looking for strategic investment partners to help us continue growing. We’ve been local for so long, we want to start connecting with people in the wide world of CPG!
member spotlight: paige hanserd
is the Brand Design Director at Glossier who sometimes writes a Substack that centers around fashion, occasional movie + travel reviews and her growing publication archive.something you read/saw recently you enjoyed: I saw Catherine Breillat's Fat Girl at Metrograph with my friend Tenaya and honestly have never watched a more polarizing, completely insane portrayal of a young girl's coming of age story. I wanted to look away but I was captivated, deeply confused, and enriched lmao. It was fucking psychotic. Not for the faint of heart at all, but I think after sitting with it I want to buy it on blu ray lol (I have a really big DVD + bluray collection...........). It's art! Again, not a recommendation so don't judge me if you watch it hehe.
last thing you bought irl: I've been trying to read more and have been really drawn to essays written by women that center around the cities they live in (s/o Eve Babitz). Anywaysssss I went to McNally Jackson and bought Maeve Brennan's The Long-Winded Lady and rebought Charles Burns' Black Hole because I can't find it anywhere and I've been dying to read it again, must've lost it in a break up. Brennan wrote for The New Yorker‘s “Talk of the Town” department under the pen name “The Long–Winded Lady” from 1954 to 1981. I love seeing an older New York through her eyes; she called New York the “most reckless, most ambitious, most confused, most comical, the saddest and coldest and most human of cities."
life hack: Don't stress babyYyyyY, get that PMA on fr fr. Stress will kill life.
you couldn’t have your career without:
Uhhhh myself?? Lol I'm not sure there is one thing I could mention for this question other than to say myself. I did it all alone, so yea!
advice for someone who wants to be where you are/do what you do:
Trust your instincts! I know that seems cliche, but it really and truly is the key to personal success and fulfillment. Doubting yourself along the journey is normal and humble, but try to fight the feeling and go with your gut-- it'll pay off! Also, always be willing to learn more and to be kind. There's always more to learn and never enough kindness :) The older I get the cornier I get, but there's a reason why that happens! lol kpbsfs forever though, real heads will know.
upcoming dinner reservation?
I'm going to finally be able to try Jago Rackham's foooood. Can't wait! I've been following him for years and we've become friendlyyYyyy. He'll be doing a pop-up here in New York at the spot (never heard of it which is exciting) and the menu goes tf off: Soft bread with fresh fennel butter, clams with cream and cider, thyme cured mackerel with apple and summer cucumbers, walnut + mint pesto w/ rough pasta, cold thick rosemary custard w/ grilled peaches!!!!!! Like!!!!
